Le papier à l’œuvre – Linie, Fläche, Form
Jean-Baptiste Monnin
With great precision, the French artist Jean-Baptiste Monnin creates drawings in which figuration and abstraction are combined in surprising ways. In the series Folds (2016–2026), Monnin uses the creases in folded paper to create compositions with a three-dimensional effect. In On Paper (2017–2026), by contrast, microscopically magnified structures of the drawing material serve as the starting point for abstract visual landscapes. Short video sequences of the hand at work draw attention to the artist’s physical gesture, whilst in the Open Paper Lab format he allows viewers to experience the ongoing creative process behind his work.
