The exhibition „Silberstreif” by artist Daniela Friebel is based on the estate of an East German particle physicist from the early days of a divided Germany. The letters and photographs trace the coming-of-age of a young man who is finding his intellectual and existential footing during a time of historic upheaval. The physical qualities of the documents—creases, handwriting, and perforations—become image carriers, symbols, and metaphors. The personal correspondence gives rise to visual condensations that transcend the biographical and raise fundamental questions about freedom, arbitrariness, and responsibility during that era of political polarization.
